The homeowners treasure this quiet retreat for reading and computer work. The kids get to use it for homework, as there are not distractions from TV, games, and chaos. Features large walnut storage closet and supply cabinets above the genuine wenge-wood slab desk (with 10 ft. open span!) which is backed by an illuminated blue crushed-glass panel. Concealed task lighting and ambient lights hidden above cabinets give many mood options. Click the photo below for a video tour.
The file credenza features sideways hanging-file rails, heavy-duty ball-bearing soft closing slides and a wenge-wood slab top to match the computer desk.
Floating above the credenza are two walnut shelves which are anchored to the wall in a hidden way that can hold much more weight than ordinary mass-produced shelves.
Custom matching walnut double doors with reeded glass complete the look and provide near total acoustic blockage when desired. Brushed metal pulls were later added to match those on all the cabinets. Hand-made walnut doorstops and crown moulding are among the many subtle details we included to ensure an extraordinarily unified space.
This unit is made with birch plywood, edged with Brazilian cherry for a pleasant contrast. The profile of the shelf fronts matches the curve of the upright supports and the end curves are all symmetrical--an exercise in geometry! Amazingly, there are no visible fasteners of any kind and the uprights are anchored to the wall in a hidden way that could support an astonishing amount of weight...a collection of 200 antique bricks would be right at home here. No legs to the floor means easy to vacuum under, plus it looks really cool.
This room simply needed a wall of fitted bookshelves, which are sturdy and fully adjustable, provided with the quantity of shelves desired. No saggy particle board or cheap flimsy Chinese plywood in our shelves, but top quality North American hardwood panels and solid trim.
